Wichita State’s offense was no match for Louisville’s defense in the semifinal round in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament on Thursday, giving the Shockers their first loss of the season, 62-52.

The Shockers held a short-lived 5-4 lead in the first half after a three by redshirt junior Conner Frankamp. Louisville gained back the lead 6-5 but was then tied after a made free by junior Darral Willis. The battle for the lead soon ended after Louisville went on a 12-0 scoring run to take the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Shockers cut the lead to five after another three by Frankamp and jump shot by freshman Austin Reaves, however, Louisville came back with back-to-back threes and put them up by 11, 26-15.

The Shockers ended the first half 33-17 after shooting only just 27 percent from the field.

In the second half, the Shockers fought back and went on a 9-0 run after connected threes made by Reaves, Frankamp, and junior Daishon Smith making it a 43-36 game. That still wasn’t enough to get the Shockers going, however, and the Shockers dropped their first game of the season, 62-52.

Sophomore Markis McDuffie and redshirt junior Shaquille Morris were the leading scorers at 10 points a piece. Frankamp followed right behind with 9 points on a 3-for-7 free throw shooting.

WSU will play No. 24 Michigan State Friday at 1:00 p.m.
