Men’s tennis looks to set pace for season

The Wichita State men’s tennis team intends to start their 2015-16 season strong in Texas this weekend for the season opening Midland Fall Invitational.

Six of the nine WSU players are heading to Texas, including team captain Tin Ostojic, who is ranked No. 26 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Ostojic said he hopes to continue the success of last season.

“The goal with this tournament is to catch the rhythm for the season,” Ostojic said. “I want to get the feel for the court again because I haven’t played a tournament in such a long time.”

The six participating players in the tournament include old and new members. The tournament will help indicate how the newcomers perform and how they mix with returning team members.

“We have got three new faces playing,” head coach Brad Louderback said. “So, the first thing that we are looking at is just watching our new guys perform. We are also trying some new doubles combinations, so we will be seeing how they do in that area.”

Though strong teams wait for them in Texas, Louderback said he thinks the outlook for the tournament — and the season — is looking bright.

“We are in a position right now where we know who we have gotten in as freshmen and we know they are just outstanding young men,” Louderback said. “They are going to perform well for us this year. We are either winning or in the hunt every year for that conference title, and I don’t see this year being any different.”
