Shocker tennis plays in final fall tournament

Wichita State’s women’s tennis team travelled to Southern Methodist University (SMU) to play South Alabama, Wyoming, and SMU this past weekend in the final tune-up tournament before the spring season begins.

On Friday the Shockers took the courts against the South Alabama Jaguars. The Jaguars proved to be no match for WSU as the Shockers only lost one doubles match, posting a 4-1 record.

Doubles was led by Julia Schiller/Gabriela Porubin who got the winning ball rolling with an 8-7 (7-2) win.

“We feel more confident on the court, since it’s our fourth tournament,” Porubin said. “The focus for the spring is definitely winning the conference again.”

Singles play was just as dominate for WSU with wins on all courts. Three matches went to the third set, but Abby Stevens, Lucia Kovalova, and Julia Schiller were able to edge out their opponents.

On Saturday, WSU got the full sweep against Wyoming, winning all four doubles matches as well as all four singles.

Kovalova picked up wins in doubles with Rebecca Pedrazzi as well as Luca Pump.

“We are playing better in every tournament,” Pump said. “Next semester, it will get serious, but this was a good tournament with good teams.”

Singles play was highlighted by a three-set comeback win from Giulia Guidetti who dropped her first set 6-4, but came back to win to the tune of 6-4, 6-7, 3-6.

On Sunday, WSU faced host school SMU. The Mustangs were able to outplay WSU in doubles with SMU winning three of five matches. In singles play Wichita State swept SMU to finish 16-0 in singles matches on the weekend.

“The spring will be tough,” Porubin said. “We’re motivated, though. We’ll stay focused.”

With the tournament sweep, WSU heads into the season break. The spring season starts Jan. 16 at home when the Shockers play Louisiana Tech.
