Women’s tennis begins fall season

Women’s tennis opened their fall season by taking three players to Pacific Palisades in California.

Junior Rebecca Pedrazzi was scheduled to compete in the pre-qualifying draw for singles play on Saturday, but had to withdraw due to ankle soreness.

“I couldn’t play because of trouble with my ankle,” Pedrazzi said. “I had to retire the match, but I plan on being back for doubles.”

WSU will officially make their tournament debut on Tuesday when junior Julia Schiller, who received an at-large bid, will begin her match.

“It’s the first All-American tournament for all of us,” senior Lucia Kovalova said. “We’re excited to play and hope we play our best tennis.”

Wichita State also entered a doubles team to the tournament where Pedrazzi will pair up Kovalova in the qualifying draw. The top four teams will advance to the main draw later this week.

“Preparation for doubles has been going well,” Kovalova said. “We stay focused on execution of strategy and positioning at the net.”

“Our team is coming on strong with our newcomers,” Pedrazzi said. “The fall season is about trying out different combinations in doubles and preparing your singles game, but we’re working hard.”

Following the conclusion of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, WSU will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to play in the MVC Individual Championships.
