Shocker baseball takes first game against No. 15 Cowboys

The Wichita State baseball team won a close game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater Tuesday night, despite a handful of late mistakes.

The win moves the Shockers to 10-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in true road games.

The Shockers got things rolling early, loading the bases in the first inning. Chase Simpson singled in a run and Micah Green hit a sacrifice fly to put the Shockers up 2-0 before junior starter Kris Gardner even stepped on the mound.

Gardner, who had pitched in just one game this season before getting the start Tuesday night, pitched two perfect innings to start the game off.

The Shockers continued an impressive offensive showing in the third inning, loading the bases once again with the help of a walk from Casey Gillaspie. Back-to-back singles by Tanner Kirk and Dayne Parker increased the lead to six runs.

Casey Gillaspie walked in each of his first two at-bats. He finished the game without a hit, but was walked three times, pushing his already outstanding on-base percentage to .567.

Oklahoma State’s Gage Green, a junior from Wichita Falls, Texas, finally sparked the Cowboy’s offense in the bottom of the third inning when he singled into right field.

Green stole both second and third base as Gardner worked through the Oklahoma State lineup before finally scoring on a wild pitch. Cowboys infielder Donnie Walton singled in a second run before the inning ended.

Gardner saw just three innings of action, but got the win after allowing two runs on just two hits.

A successful sacrifice bunt by Craig McConaughy in the fourth inning brought Oklahoma State one run closer, making the score 6-3.

The score remained the same going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Shockers allowed a leadoff double that eventually turned into a run.

Cowboys pinch-hitter Garrett Williams hit a ground ball to Dayne Parker that could have been a game-ending double play, but the exchange between Parker and shortstop Tanner Kirk was botched and the Shockers got just one out.

Oklahoma State coach Josh Holliday didn’t agree with the call and was ejected from the game after arguing with umpires.

Wichita State relief pitcher Foster Vielock then recorded the final out to earn a save and a win for his team.

The game was the first in a two-game season series against Oklahoma State. The 15th ranked Cowboys will visit Wichita on Wednesday, April 30.
