UNI gives Shocker men another loss

The Wichita State men’s basketball team lost for the second time in as many games, this time at Northern Iowa 57-52 on Saturday.

Carl Hall led all players with 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Shockers from shooting 21 of 52 (40 percent) for the game.

“We’ve got to play better than we did to win in a place like this,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “We’re having a hard time scoring.”

The Shockers trailed early before a late surge made it 23-all at halftime.

WSU continued its run to begin the second half with seven points out of the gate, but UNI answered with a 14-0 run late in the game to pull the upset over the 15th-ranked Shockers.

WSU finished with 13 turnovers to only 8 assists and attempted only five free throws in the game.

“It’s the same things Indiana State did,” Hall said. “And it worked. I turned the ball over. I’ve got to do a better job of trying to find somebody.”

The 52 points the Shockers scored is their lowest output of the season.

The loss drops the Shockers to 19-4 overall, 8-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. WSU sits alone in second place in the Valley after Indiana State (7-4 MVC) lost to Drake 74-71 on Saturday.

Next on tap for WSU is a trip to Carbondale, Ill., to face Southern Illinois (8-14, 1-10 MVC) on Tuesday. The Shockers defeated SIU 82-76 in Wichita on Jan. 9.
