Climate change a focus for SGA

The passage of Resolution 005, “Recognition of the Anthropogenic Nature of Global Climate Change” represented an important first for Wichita State University’s student body on climate change. There is consensus that the world is heating up. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, National Academies, and a wealth of independent peer reviewed studies have confirmed this warming. The issue has become increasingly polarized and as campus leaders it is our job to begin the conversation on this issue. Public deliberation on climate change and all issues is an important part of civic engagement and building an engaged and informed citizenry. Without the Student Government Association how will students express their voices on key issues? Some had expressed concern about the procedure those are misplaced, I had announced weeks before that a resolution on global warming would be submitted, so opposition had time to prepare all relevant arguments. The resolution passed nearly 2-1 under normal procedure, needing only one read as a resolution, with strong support from the majority of senators.
