Volleyball set to take on Bradley and UNI

The Wichita State volleyball team has started out the Missouri Valley Conference season on a high note. The Shockers currently hold a 3-1 record in the Valley with wins over Drake, Evansville and Southern Illinois. WSU’s only loss came in the hands of Creighton, the top-ranked team in the MVC.

The Shockers will take to the road this weekend looking to continue their success in the Missouri Valley. WSU is currently in third place in the MVC behind Creighton and Northern Iowa.

On Friday, the Shockers travel to Peoria, Ill., to take on Bradley University. Bradley is currently second to last in the MVC with an 0-3 record in conference play and 6-8 overall.

Last season the Shockers easily handled both matches against Bradley, winning each match 3-0. WSU held BU to fewer than 20 points in all six sets played against the Bears.

Following the Bradley match, the Shockers will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday to take on Northern Iowa. UNI is currently tied for first in the MVC with a 3-0 conference record and 11-5 overall record.

The Shockers struggled against UNI twice last season, losing both matchups. In the first matchup of the season the Shockers lost a nailbiter in Cedar Falls, falling 20-25, 24-26, 25-23 and 25-13.

WSU will again face a tough UNI squad who has had four of their five losses this season come from ranked opponents. UNI holds a 42-11 advantage in the overall series with WSU.

On Monday the Missouri Valley announced that senior outside hitter Emily Adney was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week. Adney had a strong weekend in the Shockers’ two wins, averaging 4.17 kills, 0.3 aces, 3.83 digs, 1.17 blocks and 5.08 points per set while hitting .362 from the left side.

In the match against Evansville, Adney became just the 11th player in WSU history to record more than 1,000 kills in a career.

On Saturday against SIU, Adney recorded her fifth double-double of the season.

Adney is the first Shocker this season to win the MVC Player of the Week honor.
