Shockers sweep two Valley opponents at home

After splitting their conference openers last weekend the Wichita State volleyball team came back home to Charles Koch Arena focused and rolled by their two opponents this weekend.

On Friday the Shockers hosted Evansville and blew by the Purple Aces winning 25-16, 25-16, and 25-17. The Shockers had a solid .300 hitting percentage with Ashlyn Driskill leading the way with 15 kills. Emily Adney had nine kills while Sam Sanders added eight. Chelsey Feekin had another all-around performance for the Shockers with 33 assists, nine digs and six kills.

In the first set WSU built an early 8-4 lead that they didn’t give up the rest of the set. The Shockers finished the set by winning six of the eight final points behind Driskill’s six first set kills.

WSU slowed down in the second set and exchanged points with Evansville before taking a 10-8 lead after a kill from Sanders that they never gave back. The Shockers again controlled the final part of the set, winning seven of the last ten points. Driskill, Sanders and Elizabeth Field each made four kills in the second set for the Shockers.

In the third set Evansville slowed WSU down taking an early 4-1 lead. An Adney kill tied the set 5-5 and the Shockers followed with an eight to two run. A Sanders kill gave the Shockers the final set and the win.

On Saturday WSU hosted Southern Illinois and continued their winning weekend with a 3-0 win. The Shockers beat SIU 25-20, 25-15, and 25-22. WSU continued to hit well with a .374 hitting percentage.

In the first set SIU took an early 6-1 lead before WSU tied the match at nine. SIU took back the lead 13-12 before WSU took the lead for good after a kill by Field.

The Shockers were never challenged in the second set, leading the entire set. A kill by Ashley Andrade gave WSU a big 12-6 lead toward a 25-15 win.

WSU went back and forth in the third set with SIU until taking a 17-14 advantage off a Driskill kill. A service ace by Feekin gave the Shockers a 20-15 lead as they went on to win 25-22.

Adney lead the Shockers with 16 kills, while Driskill added 10. Feekin had eight kills, 34 assists and six digs.

The Shockers return to action this weekend traveling to Bradley on Friday and then to Northern Iowa on Saturday.
