Marshallville gives back

Marshallville will be feeling the holiday spirit this Tuesday before the men’s basketball game and will be hosting a coat and shoe drive for the Wichita Children’s Home, head coach Gregg Marshall’s charity of choice.

Marshallville plans on donating the same number of items to the children’s home as how many wins Marshall has with Wichita State – 237 – and will be collecting those items from 3:30 to 7 p.m. before tomorrow’s game.

“Marshallville really wanted to do something to give back,” Brianna Appel, Marshallville’s event coordinator, said. “Because Wichita Children’s Home is Marshall’s charity of choice, we thought it would be awesome to pair up with them.”

For the past three years, Marshall has supported the Wichita Children’s Home during the ESPN Infiniti Coaches’ Charity Challenge.

“ESPN does a challenge every year with 32 coaches and they try to get votes every day,” junior Alan Joyale said. “At the end of the challenge whoever has the most votes gets $100,000 to the charity of their choice.”

The Wichita Children’s Home serves as an emergency, temporary residential shelter for children in the community below the age of 21, according to their website.

“If you think about it, we have students on this campus who don’t even have a coat so we’re kind of benefitting our own campus too, as well as the whole community,” junior Mara Pounds said. “We wanted to get the community involved and make it not just about the students.”

The Wichita Children’s Home houses mostly teenagers, who also stay the longest, and are mostly in need of coats and shoes in teen sizes.
