Cross country travels to Lincoln, Nebraska, for weekend tournament

Wichita State’s cross country team will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, this weekend for the Woody Greno Invitational.

The Shockers are coming off a successful finish at the J.K. Gold Invitational, where the team came out on top against Oral Roberts and Kansas State universities.

Wichita State head coach Kirk Hunter said the team is looking ahead to the Chile Pepper Invitational on Oct. 3.

“We’re resting a lot of our team,” Hunter said.

Hunter said the team will compete with 10 athletes in the Greno tournament this weekend.

“The focus for the Greno Invitational is to get valuable experience for our newcomers as we prepare for big meets,” he said.

A young squad of six women and four men will represent WSU. Among the competitors is freshman Rebekah Topham, who was named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week when she won her first collegiate race in the J.K. Gold Invitational last week.

“(Topham) was a superstar in high school in Iowa,” Hunter said. “We anticipate her to be great.”

Topham was a four-time 1A state champion at Griswold High School in Iowa. Hunter said Topham is quickly learning her potential and if she can stay healthy, she can have a great rookie season.

The Woody Greno Invitational is set for 8 a.m. Saturday.
