Men’s golf wins title

The men’s golf team brought home their first win of the season, taking the title at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Overland Park, Kan. with a 295-stroke first round and a 304-stroke second round.

The tournament faced a rainy weekend, which ultimately limited the teams to playing two rounds on the par-72 Milburn Country Club.

The Shocks’ scores were enough to put them eight strokes ahead of Denver and Kansas State for the final.

“The guys did great,” assistant coach Tony Blake said. “We beat some teams that a few weeks ago were beating us by 20 shots and now we’ve won by eight shots.”

Senior Louis Cohen Boyer shot a 3-under-par 69 in the first round, and a four-over-par 76 in the second round, earning him a second place in the tournament and his nineteenth top-10 finish of his career.

Sophomore Grant Bennet (73-75-148) finished tied for fourth place at the conclusion of the tournament while junior Alec Heinen (78-75-153) and freshman Jacob Bishop (75-78-153) both tied for eighteenth place in the tournament.

Blake noticed the competitiveness of his team on a whole new level during this tournament.

“That’s one thing [competitiveness] that I saw this weekend that I did not see in previous tournaments,” Blake said. “But they’re young, the goal is to always get better.”

The Shockers didn’t come by their victory with ease. Blake said. the recent practices haven’t been fun, but they have served their purpose.

The men are now setting their sights on the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate tournament in Las Cruces, N.M.

The team flies out Saturday morning for the tournament, which leaves limited time this week in practice to decide who will get to go.

“We have some young guys at home itching to get out there,” Blake said. “Practice this week will determine who goes.”

Blake said. the New Mexico golf course will be a drastic change of scenery. He said that instead of tree-line fairways his team can expect many blind tee shots.

“A lot of balls you won’t even see land,” Blake said. “You have to trust your blind swing and hope your ball is on the fairway when you walk over the hills.”

The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate is set to tee-off Monday, Oct. 21.
