Split women’s tennis squad dominated MVC Individuals

The WSU women’s tennis team has divided for the time being, competing in both the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship and the MVC Individual Championships at the same time.

With the top-returning players Julia Schiller, Lucia Kovalova, and Rebecca Pedrazzi competing in the All-American Championship, the Shockers would have to battle without them in Des Moines.

MVC teams are allotted a single player per flight and on day one, five of the six Shockers moved on to the semifinals, dropping just three sets total as a team.

Junior Abby Stevens led the team at the No. 1 position, defeating Natasha Tomishima 6-4 and 6-3.

“So far the team has shown a lot of promise and potential,” Stevens said. “Even though this weekend is based on individual results, we’re still making this about the team.”

Both freshmen Guilia Guidetti and Gabriela Porubin were victorious, winning 7-5, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-2, respectively.

“This is only my second tournament, but it’s very exciting playing here,” Porubin said. “We all play very differently from each other, we all complement each other well on the court.”

All three doubles teams were able to win as well, losing only six total games as a team.

The duo of Luca Pump and Aleksandra Trifunovic won at the No. 1 position, 8-1.

“The other teams have really good players,” Pump said. “We had to fight in all the matches until the end.”

Day two was more of the same, with the Shocker women continuing their strong play, moving five of the six remaining players into championship matches in their respective flights. The team moved on each entrant in the first five flights.

Play concluded Sunday with a doubles championship from Pump/Trifunovic at the No. 1 position.

No. 1 Stevens, No. 2 Porubin, No. 4 Guidetti and No. 5 Pump all took their respective singles individual titles. The lone loss came in a three set thriller that saw Trifunovic fall.

“It’s good to see all the competition we will have in the spring for conference play,” Stevens said. “The results have shown WSU is still a strong team and a force to be reckoned with.”
