Shocker Classic recap

When Cacy Williams hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning against the Iowa State Cyclones Sunday afternoon, she summed up WSU’s tournament performance with one swing — offense.

Williams jogged around the bases, pumping her right arm. Her teammates met her at home plate, and a “Whoo-HAA!” resounded through Wilkins Stadium.

But before Williams hit the grand slam, before WSU beat the Cyclones 18-16 and before WSU set team records, the Shockers played three games for the Shocker Softball Classic.

WSU hosted the Shocker Softball Classic last weekend. WSU went 4-1 and played San Diego St. and UMKC Thursday.

The Shockers lost the first game to San Diego St. 5-11.

WSU won the second game against UMKC 12-4.

The Shockers’ third game was Friday and they blew out North Dakota 16-1 in five innings.

Sophomore Paige Mason hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. Freshman Paige Luellen hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second.

WSU vs. Iowa State

WSU set records against Iowa State Sunday in homeruns (7), hits (16), runs (18) and RBIs (18). The Shockers won 18-13.

The records came after the win, which they fought for — WSU was behind most the game.

ISU took a 0-6 lead in the first three innings. The Cyclones added another run in the fourth, but the Shockers responded with five runs, 5-7.

The Cyclones scored four more to increase their lead to six, 5-11.

WSU rallied. The Shockers scored eight runs in the fifth. Sophomore Liz Broyles hit two home runs. Luellen added another, 13-11.

ISU then scored two to tie the game 13-13 before Shockers stole the game, winning by 5 points.

WSU vs. Northern Illinois Huskies

Despite a slow start, WSU won 8-3 in the final game Sunday evening.

The Huskies scored a run in the first three innings. The Shockers responded. It was 3-3 going into the fourth.

Shockers then scored five runs in the next two innings to win.

The Shockers start conference play this week.
