Baseball talent a family name for Gillaspie brothers

Shocker Casey Gillaspie and former Shocker Conor Gillaspie have more in common than just a last name — their love and impeccable talent for baseball.

Casey, six years Conor’s junior, is the first baseman whom has had made a name for himself regardless of his older brother’s status as a professional player and previous golden boy of Wichita State Baseball.

Casey was named Gatorade Player of the Year, All-State and All-Region as a senior in high school and has already begun the season with a .526 batting average. On top of these accolades, Casey was just named number 50 in College Baseball Daily’s Top 100 Players Countdown.

The brothers, who come from Omaha, Neb., started early in their quest for dominance due to their father, Mark Gillaspie. Mark played for Mississippi State with a College World Series appearance and continued his career through minor league baseball.

With so much baseball in one house, one would think the competition and talk of sport would be endless. However, for Conor and Casey, the story is different.

“We try to stay away from baseball as much as we can,” Casey said. “We don’t depend on baseball to get closer with one another… We just like to hang out like most brothers do.”

With baseball talk more or less banned from the house, one exception to the rule was Casey’s decision to go to WSU.

“This was one of the main schools that was interested in me. My brother always said good things about coming here and the coaching staff,” Casey said. “I’m glad that I came here and am thankful for the opportunity.”

It looks like WSU is thankful for Casey’s decision, too. Casey’s name is already the talk of many professional scouts. Maybe, for the first time, he’ll get to play with his brother.

“I think it’d be cool to either play with him or against him,” Casey said. “As long as I’m in there.”
