Women’s tennis hits sixth straight win

The day after beating No. 74 Missouri, WSU women’s tennis was back in action against the University of Texas at Arlington. The Shocks were able to ride the momentum from Sunday’s win and swept UT-Arlington, 4-0.

“We played aggressive and with a lot of confidence after yesterday’s win,” senior Montse Blasco-Fernandez said.

WSU beat UT-Arlington without dropping a single set.

In doubles, the team of Veronika Blaskova/Lucia Kovalova won their match 8-3. Rebecca Pedrazzi/Blasco-Fernandez followed suit when they won their match by the same score to give WSU an early 1-0 lead.

“Even with the way we’ve been playing, it isn’t nearly as easy as the scores might show,” Blaskova said. “It was a great weekend, and we were able to show we are the better team.”

In singles play, Julia Schiller was the first off the courts with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Giada D’ortona. Kovalova extended the Shocker lead to 3-0 with a win against Angeles de los Rios 6-2, 7-5. Pedrazzi bounced back from her Sunday loss to defeat Elizabeth Thoms 6-3, 7-5.

“We played with good energy,” Kovalova said. “Even though some sets in singles play were close, we finished strong as a team.”

No. 62 Wichita State will look to continue their six-match winning streak when they travel to Colorado for a three-match road trip. In their next match, WSU will play Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21 in Greeley, Colo.
