Shockers fall in spring debut

Men’s spring tennis season is officially underway as WSU tangled with No. 25 Tulsa. The match did not go exactly as the Shockers planned, as they fell in a 4-0 defeat in Tulsa.

Tulsa showed why they were ranked in the top 25 in the nation with back-to-back doubles match wins. The doubles team from Tulsa, Alejandro Espejo/Japie De Klerk, defeated WSU’s Guillermo Nicol /Guillermo de Velchez 6-1 to start the day off.

Carlos Bautista and Daniel Santos defeated Ilija Cuic and Jocelyn Devilliers by the same score to take the doubles point and a 1-0 match lead.

After a short recess, singles play began in the same way as the doubles. Espejo defeated Tomislav Gregurovic in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Finishing at almost the same time, De Klerk put away Ilija Cuic at the one position by a score of 6-0, 6-1.

Tulsa’s Dylan McCloskey clinched the singles play when he defeated de Vilchez 6-4, 6-5 (10-4).

Wichita State will head next to Norman, Okla. for a 5 p.m. match against the Sooners Jan. 21.
