Shockers beat Redbirds on Senior Night

The Wichita State Shockers and Illinois State Redbirds squared off in a volleyball battle on Saturday for senior night in a packed Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers took the win with scores of 19-25, 25-14, 25-19 and 26-24.

Before the match began, seniors Chelsey Feekin, Sam Sanders, Ashley Andrade and Elizabeth Field were honored with their families. A video package was made for each of the seniors, honoring their careers at WSU.

After the ceremony, the Shockers came out slow and quickly fell behind 3-9. Early on in the set, the Shockers didn’t have an answer for the Redbirds’ attack at the net.

WSU then narrowed the gap and pulled close at 14-19, but their work proved no avail as the Redbirds went on to win the first set 25-19.

“I haven’t been angry at this team all year, but today I was angry at them after that first game,” head coach Chris Lamb said.

Players also found themselves unfocused during the first match.

“I wasn’t all there to begin the match and that first set, but as a team we got our focus back and we battled back,” Sanders said.

After the team switched sides, the teams fought for every point until the Shockers put together an 8-0 run to have a 12-5 lead.

On a crazy point that lasted more than three minutes, Sanders finally killed the ball right down the center, giving WSU a 15-7 lead. This awoke the crowd and WSU continued to roll. Katie Reilly finished the set with two service aces and two kills, and the Shockers won the set 25-14.

The two teams went back and forth to start the third set before WSU pulled ahead 10-7.

ISU used kills from Ashley Rosch and Kaitlin Early to put them within two points before the Shockers pulled away because of fantastic plays by Sanders and Andrade that brought the lead to 17-13. The Shockers won the set 25-19 after a lift violation by the Redbirds.

In the fourth set, the Shockers came out flying to lead 5-1 after an offensive attack from the outside hitters.

The Redbirds went ahead on a 6-1 run to bring the score to 7-6 with the Shockers down.

After several aces from the Redbirds, they jumped out to a 10-6 lead. The Shockers took a timeout to regroup, and it worked, as Reilly came up big with three straight kills to bring the Shockers within one point.

ISU and WSU then traded points back and forth up to 17-16 in favor of the Redbirds after a service ace.

The Shockers then bounced back once again after two Redbirds players hit the ball out on back-to-back plays to bring the score to 24-22. The Shockers still couldn’t close the deal after a service error, and a Redbird block tied things up at 24. The Shockers then won two straight points, taking the set and match due to a block by Andrade and a kill from Feekin.

Their next match is at Loyola on Thursday at 7 p.m.
