SGA votes to ignore request for McLemore’s removal

Wichita State’s Student Government Association chose not to talk about a previously tabled dispute between its president and its chairman of programming.

SGA President Luis Carbajal had recommended to remove Chairman of Programming Sean McLemore from office at its meeting March 27.

In an overwhelming 18-3 vote on Wednesday, SGA refused to bring the issue back after it was shelved at the last meeting.

Sen. Diana Carbajal moved to bring it back to the table during remarks and announcements, and Sen. Sein Lengeju, who was absent at the March 27 meeting, seconded the motion.

The motion was voted down with only three voting yes and one abstention from Sen. Lengeju.

“I think (the Senate) just thought it was a moot point, and it was a topic that they are not interested in,” McLemore said.

Although McLemore avoided the conflict within Senate, Carbajal may still move forward using the Senate Review Board.

McLemore said he finds it unlikely that the recommendation from Carbajal will be successful even if it is moved through the Senate Review Board.

“There isn’t a precedent or procedure to have it go through Senate Review Board,” McLemore said. “(The vote) is a vindication and by my understanding, the Senate is not interested in tackling this topic.”

If the Senate Review Board does see this case, even if McLemore is found guilty, the result can be overturned by two-thirds of the Senate.

Because the motion was only tabled, it is possible, though unlikely, for the Senate to reconsider it at any time.

SGA’s Wednesday meeting also involved adding sophomore marketing major Ali Raza to the Senate. Raza was made the new business Senator with little debate.
