SGA in brief

SGA adds seven new senators

Four weeks in, and Wichita State’s Student Government Association is adding new senators to the mix.

Seven senators were sworn in at Wednesday’s meeting. Many of them gave speeches prior to being appointed that highlighted their excitement over working on SGA.

“I want to do a lot,” Abdullah Khayr, a new engineering senator, said.

It is customary for SGA to fill Senate openings after the school year is started. Often, there is a need to fill positions left open after elections or to replace senators who have resigned. A freshman senator was also appointed.

“I’m really excited and am looking forward to what the semester has in store,” the newly appointed Jonathon Dennill said.

After the appointees were elected and sworn in, SGA went back to business as usual. It passed many funding requests, including a request for more than $17,000 for the Shocker Sound Basketball Band. This funding will be used to reimburse the band for its work over winter break and supplement its travel and lodging expenses.

SGA sponsored concert to feature country stars Joe Nichols and James Otto

To celebrate its centennial birthday, the Student Government Association at Wichita State will hold a concert featuring a pair of popular country music artists.

Joe Nichols and James Otto will come to Koch Arena on Saturday, Oct. 20, the first event of its kind to be sponsored by SGA.

Approximately 7,000 tickets will be available for the concert, 3,000 being for students, the rest for general public.

General public tickets will be $15 if bought before the day of the show. Student tickets are free, and SGA expects them to go quick.

Tickets go on sale today. They can be purchased at the Koch Arena ticket office. The free student tickets can also be picked up in the SGA offices, located on the second floor of the Rhatigan Student Center.

There will also be 200 floor seats that will be given away before the October show. SGA will announce how to win these tickets through its Facebook page and via Twitter (@SGA_WSU). All other tickets are general admission.

SGA to host domestic violence awareness event

In order to raise awareness about domestic violence, the Student Government Association will be holding an event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday in Hubbard Hall, Room 208.

“We want students to know that the issues are not being overlooked and that we are trying to create as much awareness as possible,” SGA Campus Issues chair Steven Haneveld said.

Presentations from Wichita State’s Police Department, Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards Debbie Chalmers and counseling services, including Harbor House, a Catholic charity organization that provides housing and counseling to those affected by domestic violence in Wichita will be given.

According to the Wichita Police Department website, Wichita had 6,467 cases of domestic violence in 2010.
