Volleyball ends spring season with win over Nebraska

The Wichita State volleyball team wrapped up a difficult spring schedule with an exhibition win over national power Nebraska on Saturday at Koch Arena.

WSU beat the Huskers 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21, 12-15). Despite the Shockers winning three of the first four sets, all five sets were played.

“Beating Nebraska was awesome,” middle blocker Elizabeth Field said. “I think it’s the first time I’ve ever beaten them. We’ve played them every single spring, but this is the first time we’ve ever gotten a win.”

Katie Reilly led the Shockers with 14 kills. Field and Ashley Andrade added 11, and Chelsey Feekin finished with 45 assists.

While the game was just an exhibition, the players still saw it as a way to prove that they are a legitimate threat, even though the season is still months away.

“Every game we are like, ‘we are going to win.’ That’s one thing I love about our team,” outside hitter Ashlyn Driskill said. “Every game we always take seriously, even if it’s a scrimmage. We are just really competitive.”

The Shockers are coming off a season that ended in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, the first time WSU had ever gone that far into the postseason. Their fall season will get underway in August.
