Alcohol on Campus

The alcohol policy at Wichita State has recently been updated.

Wade Robinson, vice president for campus life and university relations, said that it was at the discretion of the Board of Regents.

The Wreck Center serves beer on campus from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We have a malt liquor license. We can only serve malt liquor. It has to be 3.2 beer,” student employee Josh Hudgins said.

WSU allows beer to be sold only to students with a valid ID.

Alcohol is also sold at baseball games and at basketball games.

“We’ve had minors drinking at the baseball games,” Robinson said. “Any standard application of the law applies everywhere.”

There is no alcohol allowed in the residence halls on campus, and students can be fined if they are caught. Depending on the severity of the rule broken, students can even be asked to leave the dorms.

The Wheatshocker Apartments allowed alcohol in the building until the policy change.

“As far as underage drinking goes, I really don’t see much of it at Wheatshocker,” residence life coordinator Liz Vales said. “We also have a primarily upperclassman hall, so many residents are of age already. We did a significantly better job this year of making the policy known and informing residents.”
