Zombie Walk raises food for the hungry

Only a zombie would take a walk on a cold, windy Friday night.

A few did at Wichita State.

They did it to raise awareness about hunger and food for the Kansas Food Bank.

Audrey Barba, a 2010 WSU psychology graduate, was one of the dozen or so who showed up.

“I came for the fundraising and to eat brains,” she said. “I feel like if there’s an outbreak of zombies, it’s going to happen at a hospital.”

Barba works at Via Christi Hospital as a nurse’s aid and recently applied to enter the physician’s assistant master’s degree program at WSU.

“Zombies are really in this year,” WSU political science senior Brandon Light said.

He said Thunderbird Tactical, a Wichita business specializing in firearms, sponsored the event.

He didn’t expect a big crowd, though.

“I think the fact that it’s so cold out might hurt attendance,” Light said.

Steven Rosenberry agreed.

“It’s kind of cold, which is disappointing,” he said.

Rosenberry’s company Virtual Effect Management organized the event.

He said more than a dozen boxes of canned goods were collected for the bank.

Rosenberry said collected food this year worked out better than last year.

“Last year, monetary didn’t work out but canned food worked out this year,” he said.
