Interview Do’s and Don’ts

Getting ready for an interview can be hard. Here are a series of helpful do’s and don’ts that should help you ace your next job interview.

DO’S

Research the company and the position you’re applying for. If you are asked specific questions about the company or position, you need to be able to answer them intelligently. Doing a quick Google search 10 minutes before your interview does not count as research.

Be ready to sell yourself. It’s your job to convince the interviewer(s) to hire you. If you are uncomfortable answering questions about yourself, practice. You can do this with a friend or do a mock interview through Career Services.

Say thank you. Do it both verbally at the end of your interview and in a hand-written note. Send a thank-you note as soon as possible after the interview. Just don’t be creepy and have one ready to hand them immediately after your interview is over.

DON’T

Waste the opportunity to ask questions at the end of your interview. Asking a question or two shows that you have interest in the company and position you are interviewing for. Have a couple ready, but make sure you don’t ask about something that’s already been covered. You want to appear prepared, but natural.

Humble brag. The correct answer to “What are some of you faults?” is neither “I guess I just work too hard” nor “I suppose you could say I’m a perfectionist.” Those aren’t faults. Instead, give an actual fault, like procrastination, and explain what you are doing to overcome it.

Stress. Do your homework, practice, take a deep breath and smile.
