Volleyball splits first games of MVC play

The Wichita State volleyball team opened conference play on Friday with a sweep over Drake. The Shockers won 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17.

The Shockers had a big game from Emily Adney and Elizabeth Field, who had 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Setter Chelsey Feekin had 39 assists, five kills and seven digs. Jackie Church added 18 digs for the Shockers.

In the first set, Drake used a 6-0 run to tie the set at 10. The Shockers used a 5-0 run to build a lead that they didn’t lose the rest of the set. The Shockers trailed 4-2 in the second set but used a block by Adney and Ashley Andrade to take a 12-9 on their way to the 25-16 win.

The Shockers took a controlling 11-4 lead in the third set as they rolled to a 25-16 win.

Saturday, the Shockers traveled to Creighton for their first conference loss of the season. WSU fell 25-19, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-23.

The Shockers overcame a 7-3 deficit in the second set to win their only set of the match, 25-21. The Shockers led 23-21 when kills by Adney and Feekin gave WSU the win.

In the fourth set the Shockers tied it at 17, then fell behind 21-19 from two hitting errors. A kill by Adney and a block by Feekin brought the score to 24-23, but Creighton used a kill on match point to win 25-23.

WSU will continue Missouri Valley Conference play on Friday and Saturday, hosting Evansville and Southern Illinois at Koch Arena. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
