The Sunflower is now accepting applications for positions on its 2017 spring staff.

The Sunflower is looking for motivated, creative individuals to produce content for our website — thesunflower.com — and their print edition. Background in journalism is not required, but preferred.

The Sunflower may only employ students actively taking classes at Wichita State University — undergraduate and graduate.

News Reporters:

The Sunflower is looking for individuals to work alongside our editorial staff as news reporters. As a reporter, you will be expected to pitch relevant stories, do research and attend campus events. Reporters are required to do in-person interviews and submit a minimum of two stories per week. The Sunflower is looking for people who aren’t afraid to settle and are willing to ask tough questions. Applicants must display strong writing skills.

Requirements:

• Strong writing skills; familiarity with grammar, editing, AP style
• Ability to meet deadlines
• 1-on-1 interview skills, or an affinity to learn those skills
• Strong communication skill
• Able to keep up in fast-paced work environment
• Be a self-starter
• Willingness to follow-up and continue a story

Sports Writers

The Sunflower is looking for sports writers to cover Wichita State athletics. Writers are expected to keep up with the news and events happening in various Wichita State sports. They are also expected to keep in contact with the sports information director and stay connected with the team at all times. These reporters are expected to contribute feature stories among other content.

Digital Content Producer

The Sunflower is looking for an individual(s) to assist with the design and appearance of TheSunflower.com. This person will work with the editor-in-chief, managing editor and section editors to increase web-clarity and increase engagement. This position is up to 10 hours per week.

Requirements:

• Fluent in WordPress
• Creative
• Flexible schedule
• Willing to learn
• Knowledge in journalism preferred

Page Designers

The Sunflower is looking for an individual to work on the visual layout of the print newspaper. This person works up to 15 hours per week. They must be fluent in Adobe InDesign. Page Designers must work well under deadlines, and have availability Wednesdays and Sundays. This person works with the design editor and other section editors to layout the design.

Opinion Columnists

The Sunflower is looking for opinion columnists who are willing to present articles relevant to the university, pertaining to students, faculty and administration. Columnists should display strong writing skills and an interest in campus events.

Photographers

The Sunflower is hiring photographers who understand the value that visuals have in enhancing storytelling. Applicants should have a grasp of how to capture compelling visuals. Photographers must display good time management and exceptional communication skills.

Requirements:

• Knowledge of DSLR’s (owning a camera is not a requirement)
• Experience with photo editing (Lightroom, Photoshop etc.)
• Ability to write creative and accurate captions
• Ability to meet deadlines
• 1-on-1 interview skills, or an affinity to learn those skills
