Marissa’s Melodies: Group capitalizes on a cappella movement, Demi Lovato delivers full summer album
As a cappella music has become such a hit, Pentatonix are on the leader board for being one of the best groups out there, and they just released a new album this week. Along with them, pop star Demi Lovato and indie rocker’s BØRNS have released new albums, as well.
‘Pentatonix’ by Pentatonix
Released: Oct. 16
Genre: Pop
After the hit movie “Pitch Perfect,” a cappella groups emerged and are a big deal in the pop music scene with covers of current, popular songs, and Pentatonix stands as one of the top groups. The cover of “Where Are Ü Now” is better than the original, which was produced by Skrillex and Diplo. By slowing it down with the echoing vocals, the song seems more meaningful and less of a dance anthem. “Rose Gold” (originally produced by Hucci) makes a punch with reverberating, electronic-sounding vocals. Each of the five singers also has a vast vocal range, allowing for many unique sounds that sound extremely instrumental. With the different vocal styles, all of the songs sound unique depending on who is doing the majority of the vocals (“Sing”). Pentatonix never fails to make songs unique, and the latest album proves that. Download: “Where Are Ü Now”
‘Confident’ by Demi Lovato
Released: Oct. 16
Genre: Pop
The hit single “Cool for the Summer” was easily the greatest summer anthem of 2015. Although it took a while for the rest of the album to come out, this is Lovato’s most experimental album yet. “Kingdom Come,” which features Iggy Azalea, has an off-beat vibe that sounds like Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse.” Lovato shows her vast sound change in the song “Waitin for You,” where she starts the song with rapping, which later features the rapping of Sirah. While her sound and word choice may have matured, the song meanings, such as in “Wildfire,” have not. Although I think Lovato could have made an album with deeper meaning, I hope to see her stick around in the pop scene for a while. Download: “Kingdom Come”
‘Dopamine’ by BØRNS
Released: Oct. 16
Genre: Indie-Rock
Indie bands are not strangers to having their songs used in commercials. Artists such as Matt & Kim and BØRNS have been featured in many car commercials that can draw listeners in due to the upbeat tempo. Although BØRNS has released many singles, “Dopamine” is the band’s first official album. “Electric Love” has to be one of the most exciting, fun, dance-able songs about falling in love that I have ever heard. It is one of those songs that you can’t help but move to. “American Money” slows down the album a bit with the sultry lyrics. BØRNS has definitely made a name for themselves with this killer, first album, and I cannot wait to hear what they have next. Download: “Electric Love”
