October album releases off to slow start with old rock bands, washed-up pop stars
October has started as a slow month for music, with mostly albums from old rock bands and washed-up pop stars. Wading through these albums, I was able to find some that you may be interested in. The hit EDM star Avicii released another album along with rockers Sevendust and Clutch.
“Stories” by Avicii
Released: Oct. 2
Genre: EDM
Avicii made a radio breakthrough in 2013 with “Hey Brother” and “Wake Me Up.” Since then, he’s been heard very little and may even be a one-hit-wonder. His latest album “Stories,” does not seem to have a hit either. With the very forgettable songs “Waiting for Love” and “Pure Grinding,” listeners will love dancing to them for one night, but forget about them as soon as they end. Avicii’s first album seemed to create a new sound for EDM, but this album seems to just blend in with the other dance music. “Broken Arrows” gives the album justice with “Hey Brother” flair. Otherwise, the album will mostly be overlooked at parties.

“Kill the Flaw”
by Sevendust
Released: Oct. 2
Genre: Rock
Sevendust always reminds me of a mix between Pearl Jam and Nickelback. Pearl Jam because the singer mumbles and is hard to understand, and Nickelback because the music is extremely uninteresting and sounds like every average rock song to date. With no unique or redeeming qualities, “Kill the Flaw” continues that pattern. “Cease and Desist” has a quality, heavy bass line, and a subpar guitar solo, with a constant mumbling voice of Lajon Witherspoon. Although most of their songs sound the same (“Death Dance” and “Silly Beast”), they do deserve credit for the bottom-heavy bass lines that many bands strive (and fail) to achieve today.

“Psychic Warfare”
by Clutch
Released: Oct. 2
Genre: Hard rock
By combining elements of funk and metal, Clutch has brought an entire new sound to the metal world. While some songs have a heavier vibe, and others are groovy, Clutch is able to combine different genres to create their own sound that fans have turned out to love. On the new album, “X-Ray Visions” has a fast, heavy resonance that will stick with you as a new rock anthem. While interesting, almost, but not quite rockabilly, lead singer Neil Fallon croons and screams “Decapitation Blues.” Although Clutch has been around since ’91, many may not know their progressive sound, which is why everyone should give this album a listen. By changing the classic rock sound (“Our Lady of Electric Light”), the band is bringing something new to the airwaves.
