A kind thief restores my faith in humanity

I’m sure many of you have seen those “Faith in Humanity Restored” posts on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or whatever other social network you use.

You know, the ones where someone jumps into a river to save some stranger’s dog or leaves an outrageous tip for their waitress.  You know what I’m talking about.

In a world like ours, we need those stories.

I happen to work at a popular fitness center that is the inspiration for an equally popular song that inevitably comes on at every high school dance or wedding reception. I’ll let you puzzle it out from there.

Well one day about seven weeks ago, just before Valentine’s Day, I went directly from school to work as I often do. After my shift had ended, I jumped in the pool to help with a class of special needs children. It was a typical Monday.

Or so I thought.

After the class, I gathered up my stuff to go change my clothes. It was then that I noticed something was amiss.

My engagement ring was gone.

And not only my engagement ring, but my necklace and another ring were missing as well. I ripped my backpack apart to see if I had left them in another pocket but to no avail. I checked our office and turned up nothing.

Someone had come into our private office, opened my zipped up backpack and snatched all of my jewelry within the hour I was teaching my swim lesson.

To say I was heartbroken would be an understatement. I filed a police report and a pawn report and waited.

And waited.

After a month of no leads and checking Craig’s List obsessively, I lost hope of seeing any of my jewelry again.

While I was working last Monday, one of my co-workers came sprinting out of the office and on to the pool deck to show me something: my necklace and both rings had magically turned up hanging from a thumbtack on the bulletin board in the office.

And I know what you’re thinking, but no, that co-worker wasn’t even there the day everything was stolen.

I actually sat down and cried a little because of how happy I was. I really couldn’t believe what had just happened.

So to whoever stole my stuff: Thank you for returning everything.  At this point, I don’t care who you are or why you stole them in the first place.  I’m just glad you found the will inside yourself to do the right thing and for that I am grateful.
