Fast Break reopens with Starbucks and smoothies

With all the construction, Freshens smoothie stand in the Rhatigan Student Center was among the places that closed last May for a makeover. It now has a much larger kitchen, and a huge eating area to sit and enjoy a variety of smoothie flavors. The Freshens stand has reopened in Fast Break with the addition of Starbucks coffee.

Fast Break officially opened Monday with two registers and more staff to ensure a shorter wait time.

Corporate trainers from both Freshens and Starbucks came to campus to train new staff and get them ready for the re-launch.

The addition of the Starbucks is a welcome change for students and staff to get their coffee fix.

“I have to have my coffee to prevent that mid-day crash,” said Erin Thompson, freshman.

Thompson now plans on getting her coffee from the Fast Break.

“We are going to be serving out smoothies, frozen yogurt and coffee at fast, Starbucks-level speeds,” said Freshens trainer Bill Maiellano. “The time it takes for you to get a Starbucks drink anywhere else in town is what it will take to get one here too.”

Maiellano said that the Freshens products are frozen yogurt, a healthier option than ice cream.

“There are now touch-screens with health information to inform students when they are making their selection,” Maiellano said.

Students like Jessica Packard, junior, are excited about the return of Freshens.

“I do yoga and try my best to stay healthy,” Packard said. “I’ve missed Freshens last semester; it will give me the sustenance I need.”
