Shockers squash Hornets in season opening game
The Wichita State men’s basketball team beat Emporia State 93-50 in their season opener Saturday night at Charles Koch Arena on the heels of Ron Baker.
Baker went seven-for-nine in the game with two three-pointers and three rebounds.
Teammate Fred VanVleet said Baker is a talented player offensively.
“You don’t see many guys with his size and strength that can move like him,” VanVleet said.
VanVleet led the team off the glass with six total rebounds. Chadrack Lufile and Darius Carter each had five.
WSU coach Gregg Marshall liked what he saw in the 14 minutes Chadrack played.
“I loved his offensive rebound on the foul line,” Marshall said.
Emporia State came into the afternoon game still tired from playing against the University of Missouri in Kansas City Friday afternoon.
The Shockers knew ESU playing two games within 24 hours was going to be an advantage for them.
“We knew they were going to come in off of no rest,” Baker said. “We just went at them and ran away from them.”
WSU coach Gregg Marshall said Emporia State played better than they had in their previous matchup, even though the team was tired.
Marshall said he was pleased with the way his guys played and that he thought they shot the ball well.
Wichita State will play their next game against Western Kentucky Monday night at 11:59 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 as part of the networks college basketball Tip-Off Marathon.
