Meet the new basketball recruits
Wichita State’s basketball programs have been busy off the court with recruiting. Women’s basketball announced two new players Wednesday and the men’s team announced four.
Aundra Stovall from Arlington, Texas was the first one to sign with WSU’s women’s team. She is a three star recruit and is ranked No. 60 in the nation overall. She averaged 11.4 points while grabbing 3.1 rebounds and dishing out 2.7 assists each game.
Stovall is also an outstanding student, earning an Academic All-District selection.
“Aundra is a feisty little point guard who is selfless and has a high basketball IQ,” head coach Jody Adams said.
The next recruit the Lady Shockers team signed was 6-foot guard Ashlee Ivey, who was a standout at Wichita Heights High School and attended Butler Community College (BCC).
Ivey played with Shocker player Jamilliah Bonner last season at BCC and was the second leading scorer with 10.7 points a game. Ivey averaged almost six rebounds a game and almost three assists while averaging 17.6 minutes per game.
“Ivey is long and athletic, she can score at the rim and she has three-point range,” Adams said. “She is a versatile guard who can probably flex in and out in our system.”
Head men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall announced four newly signed recruits on Wednesday.
Corey Henderson, Jr., Rashard Kelly, Zach Brown and Bush “Tom” Wamukota will all begin playing at Wichita State next season.
Zach Brown is a 6-foot-6, 200-pound wing from Houston and is playing at Sunrise Christian Academy. He averaged 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds a game, and is rated a three star prospect by rivals.com.
“Zach is our first commitment,” Marshall said.” He can do everything — defend, score, and is an athletic wing who can handle the ball.”
Rashard Kelly from Fredericksburg, Va., is a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward who is playing at Hargrave (VA) Military Academy this season.
“Richard is a ball getter and athletic rebounder,” Marshall said.
Corey Henderson, Jr. is a 6-foot-3, 165 pound guard from the Episcopal School in Dallas. He averaged 14 points, eight assists and seven rebounds a year ago. Henderson is rated a three star prospect by rivals.com.
“He is a tall point guard who can shoot really well,” Marshall said. “His father played at Texas A&M so he has some really good genes.”
Bush “Tom” Wamukota is a 7-foot, 230-pound center from Kenya who is playing at Kilgore College (Texas) this year. Last year he played at Wiley College (Texas) where he averaged 2.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 21 games.
Even though he hasn’t played for long, Marshall said, “he has a high ceiling with great hands and great feet.”
