SAC’s Shocktoberfest to conclude with prizes for on-campus designs

Wichita State’s Student Activities Council has been working hard to bring students another set of festivities for its annual Shocktoberfest.

If you’ve checked out the calendar or website, you probably already know about some of the upcoming events, including yesterday’s capture the flag tournament and tomorrow’s performance by comedian Ben Kronberg.

Something you might be wondering about as you visit various departments across campus is the variety of Dr. Seuss characters greeting you at the doors. This is SAC’s doing, as they’ve started decoration contests between students groups and departments.

As a part of this month’s activities, SAC has dubbed this years’ theme “ObSeussed with Shocktoberfest.” The fun and creative topic has inspired a large number of contestants in two different decorating contests.

Student groups were given opportunities to design banners for a light-hearted competition. The banners are hanging in the north lounge of the RSC, and the winner will be awarded a trophy.

SAC ventured outside the student body this year, as well. Eighteen departments got involved in the door-design competition. Campus traditions chair Amber Sevart was in charge of the door-decorating extravaganza.

“It has been a lot of fun, and I’m so happy with the decorations,” Sevart said. “It has been very hard to give out points and decide on a winner.”

Sevart said that the contestants were graded on three categories: originality, correlation to the theme and quality of work. The department with the most points will win the prize of a $100 office party.

Songfest and the awards ceremony on Monday night will conclude Shocktoberfest. The event will be held at the Metroplex at 7 p.m. Guests will watch a lip-syncing and dance competition along with the awards ceremony. During the event, the winners of the banner and door-decorating contests will be announced, and prizes will be given.
