Great performances elevate ‘Don Jon’
“Don Jon” is, if nothing else, one of the more interesting romantic comedies in recent memory.
Directed by, written by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the movie features some terrific performances from the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Tony Danza and Julianne Moore. Its premise might be a little strange, but everything is so well acted that “Don Jon” is definitely worth seeing.
At its core, the movie is about one man’s struggle with a porn addiction. Jon (Gordon-Levitt) spends all of his free time working out, clubbing and watching porn. He’s not the most likable character in the world, and that’s probably intentional.
Jon meets Barbara (Johansson), and the two start a fairly serious relationship. The only problem, of course, is that she isn’t a big fan of his favorite pastime. Jon falsely promises to quit, and when Barbara finds out that he lied, everything goes downhill.
It’s a fairly predictable series of events, but the performances make it special. Gordon-Levitt and Johansson have terrific chemistry together, and Moore is great, as usual, in her role as Esther, a woman Jon meets in a night class.
Danza’s minor role as Jon’s father deserves some mention, as well. He spends most of the movie yelling at football on the television or cursing at Jon, but he provides some great comic relief in his scenes. He is one of the better minor characters in a movie this year.
The biggest problem with “Don Jon” is that it was written entirely from the male perspective. Johansson’s character exits the movie for a good while after she discovers that Jon still watches porn, only getting a brief chance at the end to justify her actions. It feels like the movie takes Jon’s side on the issue, even though he’s not entirely in the right. Seeing more of Barbara’s perspective would have been nice.
Even so, “Don Jon” is a pleasant surprise. Gordon-Levitt has a great deal of potential as a writer and director, as he gets fantastic performances from every one of his actors. It earns its R rating with some obscene moments, but the comedic touches and great performances make “Don Jon” absolutely worthy of anyone’s attention.
