Shift Space gallery reopening to feature Sketchbook Project
The School of Art & Design is hosting a free lunch today, drawing marathon and a major ribbon-cutting tomorrow marking tour of the Sketchbook Project Mobile Library and the grand reopening of WSU Shift Space at its new location at 416 S. Commerce.
Shift Space, Wichita State’s downtown student art gallery, is open for business in a new location after being closed over summer break.
Its location in the Commerce Street Arts District is at the heart of Wichita’s arts community.
The reopening celebration features work from recent BFA Graduate Beth Post, award-winning community artist Kristin Beal & Bob Burdette, Wichita Area High School students, performances by the Prose Collective, WSU mascot Wu, Community based activities.
It also features food by Wichita’s Flying Stove food truck, and the last chance to see the Sketchbook Project in Wichita.
Today’s free lunch is part of an international tour by the Sketchbook Project Mobile Library, a Brooklyn-based group collecting work from artists around the world. The project has multiple “art trucks” touring the U.S., Canada, and Australia showcasing artists’ books of work on selected themes.
Several dozen Kansans have contributed, and if their work isn’t in this leg of the tour it’s available online at sketchbookproject.com. The theme of this part is “Capes, Masks, and Tights.”
“It works like an actual library,” says Jessy Clonts, Ulrich Museum’s marketing manager. “I’m looking forward to seeing people interact with the project. I don’t think we’ve had anything like this before.”
Visitors can borrow artists’ books from the truck and return them when they’re done browsing.
The lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. between Ablah Library and Lindquist Hall. At 6 p.m., Sketchbook co-founder Steven Peterman will give a talk about artistic collaboration and “crowdsourced” art. After Friday, Sketchbook is traveling to Santa Fe, N.M.
Tomorrow’s re-opening gala is from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 416 South Commerce, Suite 102. The ribbon cutting is at 7 p.m.
