WSU students participate in Wingnuts’ record attempt

Becoming a ducked dynasty is no easy feat—just ask the Wichita Wingnuts. The Wingnuts sponsored an attempt at the Guinness World Record for the largest game of Duck, Duck, Goose ever played.

As part of their scheduled promotion, “Duck Dynasty Night,” the Wingnuts’ promotion team decided to make a run into the record books.

The largest game of Duck, Duck, Goose ever played occurred in Rogersville, Mo., with 2,135 participants. The game lasted 15 minutes, 55 seconds, according to the Guinness World Records website.

The collaboration team behind the idea included Wingnuts staff members Brian Turner, the group sales manager, and Jeremy Mock, the assistant general manager.

The last instrumental member of this team was Wichita State sports management graduate student Drew Hays.

Hays, who is an intern with the team, said the event was much more difficult to organize than the team originally anticipated.

“It took two months of registration and processing,” Hays said. “I was working with Guinness closely. Their list of requirements for this to be an official attempt into the record books was extensive.”

The Wingnuts’ attempt did not rewrite the record books. The official number of participants was not released. It appeared to be upwards of 700 participants, which was a disappointing number considering that there were 1,700 fans in the stadium for the baseball game 30 minutes prior to the record attempt.

Although the team fell short of the record, the night was a win in the eyes of the staff and fans.

“It went really well,” Turner said. “Everyone was having fun, even the rest of the staff wanted to find a spot in the circle and play.”

Tessa Gehrer, a junior at WSU, was in attendance and agreed with the staff.

“This was such an awesome idea. Everyone involved was having a blast, and it went really smoothly,” she said. “I hope they try something like this every year. If they can make it something more well known, I think the city would get behind them.”
