Eating in the morning like an emperor

In German we say: Eat like an emperor in the morning, like a king for lunch, and like a beggar for dinner. The right breakfast makes your day and sets a basis for the rest of it.

I wake up every morning 15 minutes earlier to fix my breakfast. I eat daily a homemade cereal bowl which is full of fiber, vitamins and healthy carbohydrates.

I mix 100 percent whole-grain oats with Special K original cereal and flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and almonds. I mix in an apple, an orange, or add simply raisins to it. Last but not least I put some spoons of plain yoghurt in the cereal-fruit mix, but any yogurt with flavor, depending on the taste, can be added as well.

I call it my power-muesli because it gives me the necessary energy I need for a productive school and work day.

The oats, cereals and seeds give me a good source of carbohydrates and fibers which are slowly digested and which keep me satisfied longer during the day. The fruits and raisins make it taste sweet, and sometimes I add some honey as well. The yoghurt gives my bones calcium and increases my metabolism in order to make me feel lighter.

During the cold winter, I sometimes cook the oats and prepare oatmeal. However, I do not overcook the oats since I do not like it muddy. As an alternative to water, the oats can be cooked with milk. After cooking I add all the ingredients together. Cooking the oats offers a variety because it is nice to have a warm breakfast when it is cold outside.

Those who are no fans of oats, oatmeal, cereals, yogurt or fruits, can start their day with a different, but healthy meal as well.

Scrambled eggs prepared with olive oil and some onions or other vegetables are a good source of proteins and healthy vegetable fats which stay light in the stomach. Another option could be a sandwich with whole-grain or whole wheat bread, avocado spread that contains unsaturated fats, which are easily digested, and topped with turkey breast, lettuce and tomato.

For those who like it sweet in the morning I suggest a fruit salad, made of fresh fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas and, if available, grapes or melons. Especially apples and oranges can be bought in bigger amounts and are affordable for students. Mix them in a bowl with half of a cup of orange juice, or whatever one you prefer, and lastly add some honey or sliced almonds if wanted.

Fortunately there is a substitute for those empty carbohydrates such as coming from muffins or donuts that boosts our blood-sugar level for a short time and makes us hungry again after one or two hours.

Take one or two slices of whole-grain or whole wheat bread that is high in fiber and top it with a little bit of low-fat cream cheese or almond butter which is healthier than peanut butter. Almond butter contains more proteins. You can put a teaspoon of honey or jam on it to give it a sweeter taste.

Try to give your breakfast more attention, and you will see that it makes a difference for your whole day. I am addicted to my cereal-fruit-yogurt mix and I know if I eat it in the morning I am an energetic person full of motivation and optimism during the day.
