American Babel of voices: A European view of the U.S. elections

Trying to understand American politics can be challenging for some Europeans.

The three debates should have helped voters to understand what is actually going on in their possible-future-president’s mind, but it turns out that debating is just about making oneself look better than the other one.

It is about winning—but winning what? What actually is the purpose of making one`s opponent looking small, and making oneself looking superior? Where is the citizen`s success in this battle? Domestic politics is not about the self-presentation of the leaders, it is about the population. This is only what matters.

The fight for popularity between Democrats and Republicans is almost narcissistic, and both are convinced of their ideology. Giving each other nicknames is ridiculous. Diagnosing Romney with having amnesia, and comparing Obama with a sausage, reaches a low level which never should be listened to in public.

Nevertheless, there needs to be a decision. And this will actually happen pretty soon. Who is now the one and only for the Americans, and who can have the best impact possible on the American society? Looking to Europe a direct favor can be seen toward Obama: France 72 percent, UK 65 percent, and Germany 64 percent. Romney’s numbers were: France 2 percent, UK 7 percent, and Germany 8 percent.

Using these countries as representatives for Europe it can be claimed: the Europeans want Obama. Obviously Obama must have represented the U.S. pretty well in the last four years, even though some might not believe that.

The question is how much impact does the image play, which Obama has outside of the U.S., in order to be re-elected?

Is it important to be popular by the German chancellor, or by the British Prime Minister? Yes, it definitely is. Foreign relations are crucial for a country’s political image, as well as its economy; too many factors, such as foreign trade, cooperation, business, diplomacy make a country dependent on others.

It is not just about what is going on inside a country, it is especially also about what is going on outside of it.

On what the Americans want to focus on, inside and/or outside, sausage or amnesia, support for education/health care or lower taxes, will be shown tonight.

Europe holds its breathe, and either it will breathe a sigh of relief, or it will frown.
