See it or Skip it? – Nov. 8

Skyfall

There’s only one major release coming to theaters this weekend, because no one dares to cross paths with Agent 007, James Bond— not even Steven Spielberg with his film “Lincoln.” Daniel Craig reprises his role of the famous British secret agent, whose investigation leads him on the trail of an attack made on the MI6 agency.

It’s been four years since the release of the last Bond film, “Quantum of Solace,” and the anticipation level for this film is higher than ever. The timing is just right, as it is the 50th anniversary of the release of the very first Bond film, “Dr. No.”

Although my idea of a good Bond film is “Goldfinger,” I’ve come to terms with the fact that times have changed and so must Bond. Otherwise, he’s no less of a joke than Austin Powers. At least we got a great Blu-ray boxed set containing all of the Bond films up to this point with a slot made for “Skyfall” when it is released sometime next year on home video.

“Skyfall” has been out since Oct. 26 in the United Kingdom. With a gross of $289 million, it’s safe to say that the success it had there will spread to the United States, and you can’t lose seeing a Bond film at the IMAX.

My only hang-up is that there appears to be a follow-up in the pipeline and there are no extra spaces for them in the Blu-ray boxed set. I guess they’ll have to be confined to the shelf, along with the non-official Bond films, “Never Say Never Again” and the 1967 parody “Casino Royale,” which is not to be confused with the 2006 movie of the same name.

Regardless, check out the latest Bond film this weekend.
