Deshi Curry small, but worthy

Deshi Curry is a little Indian restaurant located on the southwest corner of a shopping center on 21st and Woodlawn.

Walking in, the first thing visible is a large counter with beverage machines and large menu boards behind it. The interior design is simple, yet elegant. Though it is narrow, there is still plenty of space for moving around.

My friend, Tawny, and I were immediately seated. We scanned the menu: no kids menu, and drinks come in a bottle or can, unless you ask for your drink to be put in a glass. While my friend ordered the shrimp fried rice, I ordered the chicken curry. We didn’t have to wait long for our food to be served.

The chicken curry came with three different dishes: a bowl of white rice, blended nicely with seasonings; a bowl with the chicken and curry sauce; and an empty plate to combine everything. I struggled to put it together, not being familiar with how curry is presented on a plate. The dish was good overall, but did have some flaws. The vegetables were not all high-quality, many being oddly colored. The chicken was tender in some places, but tough in others. Also, the curry sauce was chunky.

The shrimp fried rice came on only one plate. The serving of this dish was too large for just one person to eat. This dish was spicy and well-blended with rice, vegetables and shrimp. The vegetables in this dish were the same as that of the chicken curry dish: oddly colored and not top-quality. The shrimp, however, was well cooked, adding greatly to the dish. The rice was also nicely blended and well cooked.

Our server was nice. However, after bringing us our food, he never came back over to ask if everything was going OK like servers usually do.

All in all, this is a nice restaurant for coming in and hanging out with friends. If you love spicy food and Indian food, this is a place you should visit.
