‘R.A.W.’ gameplay overcomes graphic shortcomings
I was hyped to sit down with Focus Home Interactive’s “R.A.W.” After purchasing it from Xbox Live Arcade, I waited for the download to complete, imagining I’d be taking control of John Cena or The Undertaker as I hacked and slashed my way through dark dungeons and ancient crypts.
Well, no. It turns out that “R.A.W.” actually stands for “Realms of Ancient War,” and I wouldn’t be guiding Dolph Ziggler through an epic quest to dispose of an ancient evil. Bummer.
What I did get was a very standard dungeon crawler – and that’s not a bad thing.
“R.A.W.” has all the hallmarks of the dungeon crawler. Top-down perspective —check. Range, melee and magic attacks — check. Story cribbed directly from Tolkien — check.
If you’re looking for an innovative and new style of game play, you won’t find it here. However, the key to a successful dungeon crawler is local co-op, where two people can sit down in the same room together and play. “R.A.W.” has that.
“R.A.W.” is not graphically breathtaking. It’s not innovative. It is, however, a lot of fun. The equipment is varied (even two of the same “leather leggings” can have different stats), the enemies are numerous, and there are no “useless” skills on the skill tree. You will use all of your buttons.
“R.A.W.” is available now on the Xbox Live Arcade for 1200 points ($15.00). Commit to $30.00, invite a friend over and order a pizza. You’ll be able to shoot through this game in a weekend, and have a great time doing it.
