‘The Amazing Spider-Man’—better girlfriend, better Peter, better all-around
When I first heard there was to be a new Spider-Man movie, I didn’t think there was any way it would top the 2002 version.
But after watching the movie I can now say the complete opposite, although it is quite difficult not to compare the movies’ beginnings.
For those of you familiar with the comics, there are parts where it follows that storyline fairly close. For example, we are introduced to Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) as the love interest of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), aka Spider-Man, instead of Mary Jane Watson as seen in the previous Spider-Man movies.
Another similarity to the comic is that Stacy’s dad, New York City Police Department Captain George Stacy (Denis Leary), after disliking Peter, helps him as Spider-Man to battle the villain in this movie, Dr. Curt Conners (Rhys Ifans).
The greatest difference I found was that Parker did not have his best friend Harry Osborn in the latest sequel.
The movie begins by showing how Parker comes to live with his aunt and uncle. This lays the foundation for what the movie is about, explaining more of Parker’s past as a young boy with his parents than the 2002 version ever did.
For the female audience, we can see what Stone saw in hunky Andrew Garfield, who are actually together, by just seeing their on-film chemistry.
For the male audience, well, Gwen did wear skirts with long socks, if that helps. I like this girlfriend better than the popular and superficial MJ.
Parker was less nerdy than in the previous Spider-Man movie, which allowed him to be his own persona. This can especially be noted in his relationship with his Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen). His acting was well done considering the 28-year-old played a high school student.
Of course, there are things that cannot change in any Spider-Man film, like Uncle Ben dying. Although Parker never finds the thief who shot his uncle, this is how Parker begins as Spider-Man; seeking revenge on the wrist-tattooed, blonde-haired man.
Another thing that is irreplaceable in any Spider-Man movie is Parker being bitten by a genetically modified spider. The cool thing was all the advanced technology in which the spiders were displayed.
One thing that caught my eye was Spider-Man’s spandex outfit. Its detailing was so precise that it was memorable when Spider-Man was caught on camera swinging through New York City.
Although I would like to keep going about why I think this a good movie to check out in theaters, I’ll let you watch all the in-betweens and the end for yourself.
I suggest watching the movie in 3-D and waiting until the end credits are over or else you will miss a scene you will regret not seeing.
