Shockers run strong in Emporia

Over the weekend the men and women’s cross country teams traveled to Emporia to partake in the ESU Invitational at the Jones Youth Recreation Park.

Freshmen talents Brandon Lewis and Austin Sturdy both set new personal records for their time in the 8k.

“My mindset was really just don’t focus on time just focus on beating people,” said Lewis of his performance.

Lewis finished seventh and beat his previous best time by nearly 15 seconds that he set just last weekend. Sturdy placed 10th.

“I was just focused on trying to get in the top 10,” said Sturdy, “I wanted to just get another 8k under my belt and get ready for the rest of the season. Our guys ran well, Brandon, Kain, and myself were all pretty close to each other.”

Freshman Kain Anderson finished 18th, and senior Kelvin Busienei finished 31st to round out the men’s runners to finish.

“As for my teammates,” says Lewis, “I know some of them might not have done as well as they would’ve liked to do, but I know they all gave it their best.”

Freshman Sarah Wright placed sixth in the 5k with a time of 19:53 to lead the shocker women. Two minutes separated the next shocker runner as senior Julia Stafford placed 62nd with a time of 21:52.

The Shocks are next in action when they travel to Springfield, Ore. on October 5.
