A resolution introduced at the Feb. 11 Student Senate meeting recommends that Wichita State recognize international holidays. The resolution — meaning a nonbinding “ask” of the university from SGA, representing the opinion of the association — presented Wednesday is a years-long venture by International Senator AJ Haynes.
The resolution does not suggest the university cancel classes on recognized international holidays, but does recommend an attendance exemption for students who celebrate the holidays.
When creating the list of recognized holidays, Haynes looked towards bank holidays, meaning the country in which the holiday is recognized, banks, schools and other institutions would most likely be closed.
Liberal Arts & Sciences Senator Josh Mallard suggested adding language to include the rules regarding holidays within class syllabi.
The resolution was referred to the Diversity, Empowerment and Inclusion Committee to make changes and/or additions before presenting it to the Senate again.
Students can share their thoughts on legislation at weekly Student Senate meetings during the public forum period. Senate meetings are on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center, room 233.
All senate meetings are livestreamed on SGA’s YouTube channel.
