Wichita State’s Student Senate passed a resolution to recommend the university officially recognize many international holidays.
The recommendation includes emancipation days, independence days, republic days, diaspora holidays, and constitution days. It also includes cultural months such as “Caribbean American Heritage Month, Italian American Month, etc,” as stated by the SGA website.
In terms of what this recognition actually means, it varies from case to case, with some holidays warranting an exemption from class for students who celebrate , while others may be recognized on the university calendar and on social media.
A student government resolution acts as the opinion of the Student Government Association, urging the university to make the proposed change. It is nonbinding.
The resolution was passed on March 4th during the weekly SGA senate meeting, with 28 votes in favor and two abstentions.
