Wichita State’s men’s tennis team secured its highest-ranked win in six years with an upset over No. 34 Oklahoma State Sunday morning.
The Shockers’ 4-3 win over the Cowboys was also their fifth-consecutive this season, improving them to 9-7.
Wichita State won the doubles point in 6-4 decisions on both courts one and three, but dropped three of the first five matches in singles on courts three, four and five, setting up a tiebreaker on court two.
Sophomore Zaid Al Mashni, who is ranked No. 112 individually by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, won his singles match on court two in three sets against Oklahoma State’s Nicolas Kolbet. Al Mashni and Kolbet split the first two sets, and each went into extra points.
A 6-4 outcome in Al Mashni’s favor in the third decided match, giving the Shockers their highest-ranked win since 2021 and first over Oklahoma State since 1996.
The Shockers’ women’s tennis team won their 10th-consecutive game this season and 12th overall after handing Texas-San Antonio a 4-1 loss last Thursday and beating No. 42 Rice 4-3 on Sunday.
The only point the Roadrunners got was on singles court six, when Wichita State sophomore Sati Aubakirova fell 6-2 twice.
Senior Vichitraporn Vimuktananda won it for the Shockers against Rice on singles court five after the teams were tied 3-3. Vimuktananda dropped the first set, 6-1, but rallied for two-straight 6-4 wins.
Baseball
After winning its series-opener 22-4 against West Georgia, Wichita State’s baseball team eventually split the four games against the Wolves.
The Shockers lost 5-4 in Game 1 of a Saturday doubleheader. They rallied from down seven runs in Game 2 for a 12-7 victory. West Georgia won Sunday’s series finale, 13-11, in a game that was shortened to eight innings because of the Wolves’ travel schedule.
Wichita State dropped to 11-5 and fell to No. 245 in the RPI after its two losses to a team ranked No. 300 entering the series.
As a team, the Shockers hit 55 for 146 over the weekend and sent 12 home runs over the fence at Eck Stadium. Wichita State’s pitchers did allow 19 earned runs, however, including 11 in the series finale on Sunday.
The Shockers will play in-state rival Kansas State at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Manhattan.
Women’s bowling
The women’s bowling team placed seventh out of 34 teams during the Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tenn., from Friday to Sunday.
Wichita State concluded the tournament with seven consecutive wins after dropping a traditional match to No. 10 Sacred Heart, 980-880, on Saturday morning. Three of those wins were during Sunday’s best-of-seven Baker matches against No. 11 Niagara (4-3), No. 21 UAB (4-0) and No. 7 Maryville (4-3).
Junior Madi Philips carded a career-high 278 during a 1,063-971 traditional match win over Jackson State.
The Shockers finished 73-31 after their final regular-season event. Select individuals will compete at the Intercollegiate Singles Qualifying on Friday before the team looks to snag their second Conference USA title from March 18-22.
Men’s golf
The Shockers’ men’s golf team placed sixth at their third tournament this spring during the Golden Nugget Invitational last Monday and Tuesday.
Tournament host Lamar won the trophy after posting a team score of 823 (41-under par) after three rounds. Wichita State shot an 848 (16-under) as a team.
Graduate student Michael Robson led the way, individually, for the Shockers after posting round scores of 69, 69 and 70 to finish in eighth place on the leaderboard with 208 total strokes (8-under par).
Wichita State’s next tournament will be from March 31 to April 1 for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
