Wichita State’s men’s tennis team snapped its eight-game winning streak in a meeting against Tulsa last Wednesday that ended with a 4-2 loss for the Shockers.
WSU bested the Golden Hurricane in the doubles matches, 2-1, losing only to Tulsa juniors Victor Tosetto and Gus Tettamble 6-2 on court three. Sophomore Ilias Worthington and freshman Rodrigo Cruz came back to tie the doubles results, winning 6-2 on court two. Freshman Pablo Roche and sophomore Zaid Al clutched up on court one to win the doubles point for WSU, 6-4.
However, Tulsa came back in the singles matches, winning four of the five, leaving the match between Al Mashni and Tulsa senior Timothy Seger unfinished on court two.
Wichita State’s regular season finale is on the road against Drake at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Track and field
The Shockers’ track and field team had a resounding eight-event victory on Friday at the ESU Spring Open in Emporia, Kan., while also managing to break a few long-standing records in the process.
Sophomore Chairo Ogbebor broke a 36-year-old program record in the 100-meter dash by 0.03 seconds, finishing in just 10.17 seconds. Ogbebor’s time ranks second in the NCAA’s West Region.
WSU’s previous record holder, Iziaq Adeyanju, set the record in 1990 by finishing the sprint in just 10.20. This marks Ogbebor’s second broken record this season after setting the indoor 60-meter dash earlier this year.
Junior Jason Parrish leaped to victory in Emporia, winning his first 400-meter hurdles event of the season in 53.35 seconds. Junior Tyler Carroll finished second in both hurdle races, setting a time of 54.11 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles and 14.14 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles.
Junior Francesca Alvarado and sophomore Jonah Allison won first place in the steeplechase, with Sophomore Faith Ekart and Freshman Austin Carrera following behind for second.
Senior Jelese Alexander won the high jump, beginning her outdoor campaign with a height of 1.75 meters, or 5 feet, 8.75 inches.
At the Raleigh Relays last Thursday, sophomore Elkana Kipruto began his outdoor campaign by winning the 5,000-meter race with a time of 13:35.77, as well as breaking the previous school record set last season by Adrian Diaz Lopez. Kipruto also became the second Shocker to beat the 14-minute barrier in the event.
Junior Kelvin Kipyego ran a time of 14:07.33 in the 5,000-meter race, placing 45th out of 206 competitors and joining Kipruto in the Shockers’ top 10 all-time 5,000-meter list.
