After the Wichita Eagle reported Wichita State was staying tight-lipped about its west campus’ closure, the university opened up about the future of the satellite campus.
An independent construction firm is assessing what is most applicable for Wichita State’s West campus — repairing existing problems, selling it or demolishing and rebuilding.
According to an emailed statement from WSU Director of Communication Lainie Mazzullo-Hart, the west campus encountered “water intrusion issues” last summer. The university proactively moved operations from the west campus to the WSU Old Town campus for the spring 2026 semester and hired an independent construction firm to assess the west campus.
The firm “is currently conducting a comprehensive review of the building to assess the nature, extent and viability of needed repairs,” Mazzullo-Hart wrote. “Upon completion of that assessment, the university will review the findings and determine the appropriate next steps for the facility.”
The possible futures for the west campus include repairing the existing building, selling it or demolishing and rebuilding the west campus.
Mazzullo-Hart’s statement also said that “the exact outcomes aren’t currently known until that assessment is completed.”
