Wichita State Student Body President Jia Wen Wang announced on Wednesday that she vetoed Association Resolution 68-014, which would recommend the university add an honorary A+ to its grading scale.
“I am vetoing this resolution on the grounds that it would not provide clear, consistent support for Wichita State students,” Wang said. “A+ — as an honorary title — would not be transferable to other state institutions within Kansas and would fail to benefit our students as such.”
Wang also said that the A+ as an honorary title was found to be the least popular option in the Academic Affairs Committee’s surveys. The committee surveyed nearly 400 students to see if they would approve of the change. When he presented the resolution in senate, Liberal Arts and Sciences Sen. Josh Mallard said the honorary A+ would be a “stepping stone” to eventually changing grade point averages, but that the registrar’s office made it clear such a change was not currently possible.
Wang shared the complete survey findings with The Sunflower.
The survey showed that the average rating out of 10 for “How would you rate having the A+ replace A as the 4.0 GPA?” was 7.17 and “How would you rate having A+ be assigned a GPA higher than 4?” was 8.77.
The least popular option was the A+ being purely honorary, with an average rating of 6.86.
The resolution was first introduced at the March 4 Student Senate meeting and was approved by the Senate on March 11.
