Wichita State softball’s game schedule this week has been adjusted, according to multiple announcements from the athletic department on Wednesday.
The Shockers were originally slated to complete a game against No. 19/20 Oklahoma State on Wednesday evening. It was suspended on March 10 in Stillwater due to a prolonged weather delay in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and Wichita State holding onto an 8-3 lead.
WSU was then scheduled to play a full seven-inning game at Wilkins Stadium shortly after the conclusion of the resumed game.
What was an already unlikely set of circumstances was made even more bizarre, as the Cowgirls’ team bus was involved in an accident en route to Wichita, postponing action on Wednesday. One of the announcements confirmed that nobody from OSU was injured.
The timing to resume play may be difficult for both teams. While the Shockers have openings for a midweek game next week, OSU is scheduled to play Oklahoma Wednesday, April 15.
WSU’s slate is full the following weeks, with games scheduled at Missouri-Kansas City and Kansas on April 22 and 29, respectively. The Cowgirls also have games scheduled for those dates.
It seems likely the only time to make up the March game and Wednesday’s game will be to play an extra midweek game sometime before the final conference series in May.
“When the new game day and time are set, those details will be shared,” the announcement stated.
Additionally, this weekend’s series against Texas-San Antonio has been altered due to a threat of inclement weather in the Wichita area, according to a separate announcement made earlier Wednesday.
The games were originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon on Sunday — all at Wilkins Stadium.
They have been moved to a Friday doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. Game 2’s first pitch will be 40 minutes after the end of Game 1. The series against the Roadrunners will now finish at 10 a.m. Saturday, with no Sunday game.
Wichita State is currently 21-15 overall and 9-6 in the American Conference after securing a series win against rival Tulsa at home last weekend. The Shockers are in second place in the league, two games behind both South Florida (29-12, 11-4 American) and North Texas (22-17, 11-4) in the standings.
The canceled game on Wednesday, though unfortunate due to the circumstances, will give Wichita State more time to prepare for the series against UTSA, offering a chance to push for the top spot in the American with just four conference series remaining this season.
